What is Baptism?
Baptism is the first sacrament of initiation and the beginning of life in the Church. Through Baptism, a person is welcomed into the family of God and the parish community.
Who can be baptised?
Any child whose parents are willing to raise them in the Catholic faith can be baptised. Adults preparing for Baptism are welcomed through a separate journey of preparation.
Godparents
One godparent is required; two are customary. Godparents should be confirmed, practising Catholics who are willing to support the child and family in the life of faith.
How the day unfolds
Baptisms normally take place after Sunday Mass. Families are asked to arrive early and bring any required certificates and a baptismal candle.
Preparation for parents
Parents may be asked to meet with the priest before the date is confirmed. This meeting gives time to discuss the rite, godparents and practical arrangements.
