What is Baptism?
Any child whose parents are willing to raise them in the Catholic faith can be baptised. It is not necessary for parents to be married in the Church, or for both parents to be Catholic.
Adults preparing to be baptised are welcomed through the RCIA, a separate journey culminating at the Easter Vigil.
Who can be baptised?
What is needed is a real intention that the child will grow up knowing the faith — in the home, in the school, and in the weekly rhythm of Mass.
Godparents
One godparent is required; two are customary. Godparents must:
- Be aged 16 or over
- Be confirmed, practising Catholics
- Be willing to support the parents in raising the child in the faith
- Provide a Letter of Freedom if baptised elsewhere
How the day unfolds
Baptisms usually take place after Sunday Mass. Families are asked to arrive early and bring the child’s baptismal candle and any required certificates.
Preparation for parents
Parents may be asked to attend a short preparation meeting with the priest before the baptism date is confirmed.
